Classification of Computers

Generally, we can classify Computers on the basis of work, size, model and brand.

On the basis of work:

1)      Analog Computers:- They work on analog signals which indicates the variation in physical quantities. They are used to measure physical values. They are used for scientific purposes, telecommunications, cars( as speedometer).

2)      Digital computers:- They work on digital signals which represents digits 0 or 1. They are used for analysis, calculations, engineering and various other purposes.

3)      Hybrid Computers:- They are those computers which comprises the features of both analog and digital computers. They are widely used as they can have combined feature of both analog and digital computer.

On the basis of size:

1)      Super Computers: Super computers are the largest and powerful computers till now. They have large size. Various users can operate the single device at same time. They are used to perform complex tasks.

2)      Mainframe Computers: They have reduced features of Super computers. Besides that also it offers high speed, large storage capacity. It occupies space of about 100 sq. feet.  They are used for Population census, result publication etc.

3)      Mini Computers:- They have reduced features of Mini Computers. About 50 persons can work with in a single Mini computer at a time.

4)      Micro Computers:- They are the widely used computers. They are small in size and are portable. It’s features are increasing rapidly. They are used for multi purposes.

On the basis of model:-

1)      XT computers: XT is abbreviated form of Extended Technology They use 8086 or 8088 micro processor. They have speed of 4.77Mhz.

2)      AT Computers: AT is abbreviated form of Advanced Technology. They have 80286 microprocessor.

3)      PS/2: They have Advanced design.  Hey can run the latest programs.

On the basis of Brand:-

1)      IBM PC: IBM is an abbreviated form of International Business Machine. They are manufactured by IBM company. It is one of the popular companies in manufacture of Computers.

2)      IBM Compatible: They have similar features of IBM computers and are called as duplicate of IBM PC.

3)      Apple Macintosh: They have different features than IBM computers. They require different programs.
